At the start of a new term, everyone is grieving for Nick. A new student and Deloraine’s nephew, Matt, arrives at Hartley, having been expelled from previous schools due to bad behaviour. Matt doesn’t get off to a good start when he borrows Deloraine’s car without asking. Media studies teacher Vic Morris arrives and sets up a group video project, which becomes a tribute to the late Nick. Effie starts classes at Hartley.

The school basketball team players look to improve after losing a game, and recruit former professional player Vic as their coach. The kids are surprised to learn that Matt is Deloraine’s nephew, and are suspicious that he is reporting back to his uncle. Rose brings her baby to class when there is no one to look after her, but isn’t able to hide it for long. Con misunderstands when Lucy and Danielle ask for his help to seduce Steve.

Feeling protective of Jodie, Con isn’t happy with Matt getting closer to her. Steve and Lucy take things to the next level, and Jack tries to teach Rose Vietnamese.

Rivers, Con and Matt are stopped on the street by police and searched for drugs, so they decide to make a controversial documentary about the police’s treatment of young people. The video causes problems for Vic and his media studies course when they fail to get the cops’ side of the story. Steve and Lucy are worried that they may have picked up STIs from previous relationships. Rivers offers to babysit Tess with the ulterior motive of attracting women.

(This episode wasn’t shown by Network Ten in the original run due to its non-family-friendly content, it was instead shown later in the year in a later time slot. Guest stars Ernie Dingo as Vic, Don Halbert as Joe, and Emily & Nicola Freedman as baby Tess.)

Danielle develops a crush on Vic, and plans to get time alone with him by interviewing him for her project. Rose is jealous when she sees Jack with another girl, and assumes that he has moved on from her. Steve and Lucy struggle to get time alone together at the warehouse, and Vic makes the decision to leave Hartley and return to his previous school.

Yola is hurt when her policeman boyfriend, Joe, starts spending time with an ex-girlfriend and her son. Southgate begins dating Danielle’s mother, Suzie.

Danielle’s sister Nicole is desperate for their parents to get back together, so is horrified to discover that their mother is seeing Southgate. The gang plan a surprise birthday party for Rivers’ 18th, but their secretive behaviour leads Rivers to think they want to evict him from the warehouse. Con and Rose feel awkward around each other since their kiss, and decide to just be friends, but Rose is angry with Con when he enters Tess into a baby photo contest without telling her.

Nicole starts making Southgate’s life hell after finding out he’s dating her mum, and tells her father. Matt gets a job at the Shark Pool, but is fired when he attacks a customer who is bothering Jodie. Unable to afford to live at the warehouse, and when Jodie tells him she can’t move on from Nick, Matt moves back in with Deloraine. Jodie and Lucy plot revenge after they find out Rivers has been spying on them in the shower through a mirror. Con and Rose go on a date.

Yola finds out she is pregnant and tells Joe, but they are unsure about whether to keep the baby. Jodie and Matt are forced together by a school project and get along well, but she says no when he asks her out. Con becomes protective of Effie when she buys a dress for the school dance.

Rose’s daughter is taken to hospital, which causes Yola to worry about how she will cope as a mother. Joe reassures her that she will manage fine, and they decide to keep the baby, but tragedy is about to strike. Matt and Jodie are getting closer, but they are interrupted by Jodie’s sister Karen, who comes to stay at the warehouse. After Tess is given the all-clear, Jack says he wants to be there for her and the baby more, and proposes to Rose, which makes Con jealous.

Rose accepts Jack’s proposal, but then receives another offer of marriage from Con. Matt kisses Karen, but when he later hears a song Jodie has written about him, Matt realises Jodie has feelings for him. Jodie gets a call from a music producer, but Karen answers the call, and later pretends to be Jodie at a meeting. Yola returns to Hartley but isn’t coping well after Joe’s death. Rose and Jack get married, and Rose transfers to Jack’s school.

(Guest stars Tai Nguyen as Jack, and Joy Smithers as Karen. Note – in addition to this being Jack’s final guest appearance, it’s also the final appearance for Katherine Halliday as Rose)

Rivers’ father turns up at the warehouse after escaping from prison. Rivers plans to go to Queensland with his dad, but Southgate advises him against it. Jodie decides she’s had enough of Karen and kicks her out of the warehouse. Con lets Karen stay in his room secretly, and his parents are not impressed when they find out.

Matt and Rivers are suspected of vandalising and then stealing Southgate’s surf boat, and so take matters into their own hands to get the boat back. Jodie and Matt want to sleep together for the first time, but keep getting interrupted. Lucy plans to leave on a six month exchange programme to Japan.

Yola’s doctor advises rest when she has some problems with her pregnancy, and Southgate looks after her. Later, Southgate announces he is leaving Hartley to become principal at a rural school and invites Yola to come with him and take up the position of counsellor there. Deloraine takes an unwelcome interest in Matt’s love life, and invites Jodie round for dinner. Steve and Danielle recruit everyone to make a horror film, and Jodie and Matt are cast as the lead couple. The gang are spooked by a strange apparition in the background when they watch the tape back.
