Sam makes a surprise return to Hartley, after promising Deloraine that she isn’t back to pursue Rivers. Rivers is happy to see her back, but she makes it clear to him that she is not interested in starting up a relationship again. Con skips school to manage the Shark Pool, so Roberto steps in to help. Effie and Bart start dating, and she asks Con for advice when Bart asks her for a kiss. Con feels awkward so he asks Danielle to talk to her instead.

Katerina returns, hoping to get back with Rivers. When he tells her he’s in love with Sam, a jealous Kat tells Sam that she is sleeping with Rivers to try and get a reaction. Later, Rivers kicks Kat out of the warehouse and she has nowhere to go. After speaking to her mother, the Bordinos agree for Kat to stay with them. Jodie agrees to be a model for Steve’s photography project, ignoring Matt’s objections. Effie and Bart have some relationship troubles.

After receiving a blue sweater as a present from his birth mother Lorraine, Steve goes to her house to thank her, and the door is answered by a girl called Allie, wearing the same sweater. Lorraine invites Steve for dinner, and they discover that they are half brother and sister. Steve invites Allie to the beach with him and his friends, but Allie has a surfing accident. Kat competes against Sam during self-defence lessons. Effie wants to start wearing a bra but is worried Helen won’t let her, so Kat buys her one.

Rivers pushes Hartley High’s new science teacher Andrew Bell off his bike on the way to school, and Andrew starts picking on Rivers. This makes Rivers want to do well at science to prove Andrew wrong, and he teaches Allie to drive in exchange for personal tutoring. Andrew becomes pushy with the students to succeed in the HSC trials, which causes Danielle to panic about the high grade she will need to do a journalism course. Deloraine promises use of his car and holiday home if Matt gets top marks in a science test. Roberto rumbles Con when he finds him reading an erotic novel instead of studying.

Allie goes behind her parents’ backs and enrols at Hartley. Rivers is challenged by his classmates to direct the school production of ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ and Katerina and Matt are chosen as the two leads, which doesn’t please Jodie. Sam assures Deloraine she will be able to work with Rivers on the play without getting too close to him. Steve loses a pocket-watch that belonged to his great-grandfather, and Andrew accuses the others of stealing it.

Roberto faints at work, and Helen insists he visits a doctor, who tells him that he might be very ill. Con steps in to help Roberto when he is sacked from a building project. ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is under threat when Rivers is put on detention by Andrew, and Kat pulls out of the lead role.

Jodie accuses Matt of not being passionate about anything but her, and says they should spend some time apart. Whilst conducting a science project, Matt finds out that a local factory is dumping toxic chemicals into the sea and poisoning sea life. He campaigns to prove this, but it unexpectedly brings him closer to Allie. Sam is looking for a new roommate so she can afford the rent, and Andrew puts himself forward.

Steve and Danielle experiment with photography, and when they develop their photos, Rivers spots his dad in the background, who is on the run from prison. Deloraine asks Steve if he’d like to create an exhibition of his photos at the school, which brings Steve and Danielle back together. Matt and Jodie realise that they have little in common and break up, while Con and Katerina get together.

Jodie becomes infatuated with singer/songwriter Tim Beckett, and he invites her to his place to write a song together. However, Jodie discovers Tim has a drinking problem. Katerina convinces Deloraine to let her sell healthy food in the school, but Con sabotages her efforts by opening a hot dog stand. Andrew finds out about Sam’s affair with Rivers. Danielle complains to Steve that they never get any alone time, which causes Allie to think her new friends hate her now that she is in a relationship with Matt.

Jodie scores a record deal, and the record company tells her they will find her a new manager to replace Con. The students are encouraged to think about what they want to do after the HSC. Kat prepares for an audition with a national dance company, but exhausts herself by practising hard and not eating enough. Steve starts working as a photographer for a local paper, but they use his shots of Tim in a story about the singer’s fall from grace. Rivers attempts to use Kat to make Sam jealous.

Con and Kat organise a pool party at the Bordinos, while Helen and Roberto are away at a wedding. Rivers suggests playing Truth or Dare, which causes tension. More trouble ensues when some gatecrashers arrive at the party, and Rivers gets beaten up. Jodie decides to quit school to focus on her music career, and comes to the party to say her goodbyes. Con breaks up with Kat.

Allie moves into the warehouse after a fight with her parents. Con and Matt start the Radio Hartley channel, and broadcast Jodie’s new single over a popular station’s signal. Kat and Con experience some communication problems, but Kat eventually plucks up the courage to tell him how she feels about him. Andrew buys a motorbike to show Sam that they have similar interests, and Rivers agrees to fix it up.

With few enrolments for next term, Hartley faces closure. The stress causes Deloraine to suffer a mild heart attack, and Andrew steps in to run the school while the principal recuperates. The gang try their best to entice more students and Con asks Jodie to give a performance at the enrolment day. Sam turns down Andrew’s proposal, telling him she isn’t ready to get married, and later, Andrew catches her kissing Rivers.
